National Codes

History of the National Codes

In the early 1990’s BIPDT decided to provide a set of basic dog handling tests that could be used by clubs as a structure for building their classes around. Jacqui O’Brien was instrumental in formulating the various tests that would be on offer, leading to either a Gold, Silver or Bronze award. BIPDT were approached by the Kennel Club to help them produce something similar (exercises not the same), deciding that the take-up would be higher through the KC, BIPDT placed our set of tests into abeyance. BIPDT helped the Kennel Club to launch their series of tests at Crufts and were involved in the Kennel Club Good Citizens stand for several years. Several of the Institute personnel were approached to help commentate, one of whom could be heard for many years in the Good Citizens ring. In 1997, we decided to resurrect the National Codes. We gained sponsorship and limited the Code to BIPDT registered clubs.

In 2013, we decided to open the National Codes to any club, organisation or individual who wished to run it.

In 2014 we developed a Code specifically for those who wish to progress with Agility, known as the National Agility Code.

The National Pet Code is compiled of three certificates which must be taken in order; Bronze, Silver and Gold;

BRONZE
aimed at the Pet Dog Owner who is just starting to train their dog;

SILVER
for those wishing to progress from the basic course and to give a purpose to continued training; and

GOLD
for the dedicated club member.

The National Agility Code is compiled of four certificates, which must be taken in order; Groundwork, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

GROUNDWORK
which is aimed at the young dog and takes into account the different ages of physical maturity of the dog. Preparing dogs in the fundamentals before starting more formal agility training.

BRONZE
aimed at the Pet Dog Owner just starting to train their dog in Agility;

SILVER
for those wishing to progress from the basic course and giving purpose to the continued training.

GOLD
for the dedicated Club member who has completed the Silver test.
